During my career as a mortgage professional I have certainly spend a lot of time looking at credit reports and fixing mistakes on credit bureaus. Sometimes the things we are fixing are not even mistakes but rather public records that never had the satisfaction recorded. So we end up digging into an issue that happened 11 years ago or something.
I encourage customers to have a professional look at their credit report and see what needs to be done to improve your scores. Sometimes there are blatant things like clearing judgments or showing settlement of debts. Sometimes it is something as silly as a typo on a credit application that generates an alias which acts negatively upon your profile.
There are good credit repair companies that earn their money upon success rather than just a monthly fee that never seems to stop. An extra 40 points on a credit bureau makes for less expensive borrowing in all facets of your life. Better car loans, credit cards,mortgage,insurance, terms on anything.
